Why is this medication prescribed?

Infections of the respiratory tract, such as pneumonia, can be treated or prevented by doxycycline injection. Infections of the genitalia, skin, intestines, and urinary system are also treated with it. For anyone who may have been exposed to anthrax in the air, doxycycline injection may be used to treat or prevent anthrax (a dangerous infection that may be purposefully distributed as part of a bioterror assault). Tetracycline antibiotics, which include doxycycline injection, are a group of drugs. It functions by eradicating the infection-causing germs.

Colds, the flu, or other viral infections cannot be treated with antibiotics like doxycycline injection. Your chance of subsequently developing an infection that is resistant to antibiotic therapy increases if you use or take antibiotics when they are not necessary.

How should this medicine be used?

Doxycycline injection is available in powder and liquid combinations that are administered intravenously (into a vein). It is often administered over a period of 1 to 4 hours every 12 or 24 hours. The type of illness you have and how your body reacts to the medication will determine how long your treatment will last.

Doxycycline injections can be administered either in a hospital setting or at home. Your healthcare professional will demonstrate how to administer the drug if you will be receiving doxycycline injection at home. Make sure you comprehend these instructions, and if you have any issues, consult your healthcare professional.

During the initial days of your doxycycline injectable treatment, you should start to feel better. Call your doctor if your symptoms don’t go away or get worse. After finishing the doxycycline injection, let your doctor know if you continue to have symptoms of infection.

Even if you feel better, keep taking the doxycycline injectable until the prescription is finished. Your illness might not be entirely treated if you stop using doxycycline injection too soon or skip doses, and the bacteria might develop an antibiotic resistance.

Other uses for this medicine

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this drug should be used for something else.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before receiving doxycycline injection,

  • If you have an allergy to doxycycline, minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin, Solodyn, Ximino), tetracycline (Achromycin V, in Pylera), demeclocycline, any other drugs, or any of the chemicals in doxycycline injection, let your doctor and pharmacist know right away. Get a list of the components from your pharmacist.
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about any additional prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, dietary supplements, and herbal products you are now taking or intend to use. Anticoagulants (sometimes known as “blood thinners”) such warfarin (Jantoven), carbamazepine (Epitol, Tegretol, and others), penicillin (Bicillin, PfizerPen), phenobarbital, or phenytoin should be mentioned (Phenytek). Your physician might need to adjust the dosage of your drugs or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
  • If you have lupus or have ever had it, let your doctor know (a disease in which the body attacks many of its own organs).
  • You should be aware that doxycycline injection could lessen the efficacy of hormonal birth control (birth control pills, patches, rings, or injections). Consult your doctor before adopting a different method of birth control.
  • Inform your doctor if you are expecting, intend to get pregnant, or are nursing a baby. Call your doctor if you get pregnant while having a doxycycline injection.
  • Have a plan to limit your time spent in the sun and to use sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothes. Your skin may become photosensitive after receiving a doxycycline injection.
  • You should be aware that doxycycline usage during pregnancy, in newborns, or in kids up to age 8 can result in permanent tooth staining and issues with bone growth. Children under the age of 8 should not have doxycycline injectable unless specifically prescribed otherwise by your doctor.
