Why is this medication prescribed?

Doxepin topical is used to treat eczema-related skin irritation. Doxepin belongs to a group of drugs known as topical antipruritics. It might function by obstructing histamine, a chemical in the body that causes symptoms like itching.

How should this medicine be used?

Doxepin is available as a skin-applying lotion. For up to 8 days, it is typically administered four times per day, spaced at least three to four hours apart. Doxepin should be taken daily at roughly the same times. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. Follow the doxepin topical directions exactly. Use it only as directed by your doctor, neither more nor less often.

Follow these instructions to use the cream:

  1. Use a soft towel to pat dry the affected skin after washing it with water, a light soap, or a cleansing lotion without soap.
  2. On the skin that is harmed, smear a light layer of lotion. Massage it into the skin in a gentle yet thorough manner. Avoid getting the medicine in your mouth or eyes. If doxepin does get in your eyes, rinse thoroughly with water and notify your doctor if your eyes begin to itch.
  3. Avoid applying any bandages, dressings, or wrappings to the injured region.
  4. After handling the drug, wash your hands with soap and water.

Other uses for this medicine

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you believe this drug should be used for something else.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using doxepin cream,

  • Inform your physician and pharmacist if you have any drug allergies before to taking doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan).
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, dietary supplements, and herbal products that you are now taking or intend to use. Incorporate any of the following: drugs for irregular heartbeat, such as encainide (Enkaid), flecainide (Tambocor), propafenone (Rythmol), and quinidine (Quinaglute, Quinidex); antidepressants (mood elevators); antihistamines; carbamazepine (Tegretol); cimetidine (Tagamet); and drugs for nausea as well as mental disease. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), and tranylcypromine, should also be disclosed to your doctor or pharmacist if you are currently taking any of them or have stopped taking them within the previous two weeks (Parnate). Your doctor might need to adjust your medication doses or keep a close eye out for any negative side effects.
  • Inform your physician if you have glaucoma, benign prostatic hypertrophy (prostate enlargement), or urine retention (inability to empty your bladder completely or at all).
  • Inform your doctor if you are expecting, intend to get pregnant, or are nursing a baby. Call your doctor right away if you get pregnant while taking Doxepin. Doxepin shouldn’t be taken if you are nursing a baby.
  • Inform the surgeon or dentist that you are on doxepin if you are having surgery, including dental surgery.
  • Doxepin may cause you to feel sleepy, so be aware of this. Prior to understanding how this drug affects you, avoid using machinery or driving a car. Speak to your doctor if doxepin causes you to feel really sleepy.
  • Keep in mind that drinking alcohol can worsen the drowsiness brought on by this drug.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

Keep eating normally unless your doctor instructs you otherwise.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

As soon as you realise you missed a dose, administer it. If the next dose is soon due, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Applying extra cream won’t make up for a forgotten dose.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. Keep it away from excessive heat and moisture at room temperature (not in the bathroom).

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medications website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.

Although many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org
