Why is this medication prescribed?

Patients with cystic fibrosis who take dornase alfa have fewer lung infections and better lung function. It improves airflow and stops bacteria from growing by breaking down the heavy secretions in the airways.

Ask your doctor or chemist for more details if you’re interested in using this medication for any other conditions.

How should this medicine be used?

Dornase alfa is available as a solution for oral inhalation. It is often taken once or twice a day. Ask your doctor or chemist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. Follow the dornase alfa directions exactly. Use it only as directed by your doctor, neither more nor less often.

Although it doesn’t cure cystic fibrosis, dornase alfa is used to treat it. Even if you feel good, keep taking dornase alf. Without consulting your doctor, do not discontinue taking dornase alfa.

Read the enclosed written directions before using dornase alfa for the first time. Get a demonstration of the correct procedure from your physician, chemist, or respiratory therapist. While they are around, practise using the nebulizer. Use a nebulizer only if your doctor has prescribed it.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using dornase alfa,

  • If you have an allergy to dornase alfa or any other medication, tell your doctor and chemist right away.
  • In addition to vitamins, be sure to let your doctor and chemist know what prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking.
  • Inform your doctor if you are expecting, intend to get pregnant, or are nursing a baby. Call your doctor if you become pregnant while taking dornase alfa.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

The missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember. If the next dose is soon due, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing plan. To make up for a missing dose, do not take a second one.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Dornase alfa’s negative effects could occur. If any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away, let your doctor know.

  • Voice variations
  • Unwell throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Eye discomfort
  • Rash

Call your doctor right away if you encounter any of the following signs.

  • Increased breathing difficulty
  • Chest ache

You or your doctor can submit a report to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting programme online or by phone if you have a serious side event (1-800-332-1088).

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. Keep it refrigerated and out of direct sunshine. Don’t leave the medication at room temperature for more than a day. Any ampule that has been exposed to air for longer than 24 hours needs to be thrown away. If the solution is hazy or discoloured, throw the ampules away.

Although many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your chemist or the garbage/recycling agency in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medications website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.

What other information should I know?

Keep all of your appointments with your physician and the lab. To determine how you are responding to dornase alfa, your doctor may perform specific lab tests.

With the nebulizer, avoid diluting or combining dornase alfa with other medications.

Devices for inhalation must be cleaned often. Care for the nebulizer according to the written instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Do not share your medication with anybody else. Any queries you may have regarding prescription refills should be directed to your chemist.

You should keep a written record of every drug you take, including prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medications, vitamins, minerals, and other dietary supplements. Every time you see a doctor or are admitted to the hospital, you should carry this list with you. Also, it is crucial to have this knowledge on hand in case of emergency.
