What special precautions should I follow?

  • If you have an allergy to ganciclovir, acyclovir (Sitavir, Zovirax), any other drugs, or any of the ingredients in ganciclovir injection, inform your doctor and pharmacist right away. Request a list of the components from your pharmacist.
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about any additional prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, dietary supplements, and herbal products you are now taking or intend to use. Incorporate any of the following: dapsone, flucytosine (Ancobon), doxorubicin (Adriamycin), amphotericin B (Abelcet, AmBisome), cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune), imipenem-cilastatin (Primaxin); HIV/AIDS drugs include didanosine (Videx) or zidovudine (Retrovir, in Combivir, in Trizivir), pentamidine (Nebupent), probenecid (Benemid; in Colbenemid), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra), vinblastine, or vincristine (Marqibo Kit). Your physician might need to adjust the dosage of your drugs or keep a close eye on you for side effects.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had had renal illness, low red, white, or platelet counts, other blood clotting or bleeding issues, CMV retinitis-related eye difficulties, or any other health issues.
  • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, let your doctor know. Infertility may result from ganciclovir injection (difficulty becoming pregnant). However, you should use reliable birth control while using ganciclovir injection if you’re a female and capable of getting pregnant. You should use a condom for 90 days after finishing therapy if you’re a man and your partner has the potential to become pregnant. Call your doctor right away if you find out you’re pregnant while having ganciclovir injectable.

What side effects can this medication cause?

  • Unexpected fatigue or weakened state
  • Light skin
  • Rapid or erratic heartbeat
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Tingling, burning, or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Vision alterations
  • Less urinations

An injection of gancclovir may make you more likely to get other cancers. You should discuss the dangers of using this drug with your doctor.
