Why is this medication prescribed?

Osteoporosis is treated with postmenopausal women using calcitonin salmon injection. Osteoporosis is a disease that makes bones brittle and more likely to shatter. When necessary, calcium levels in the blood can be promptly reduced using a calcium-salmon injection and used to treat Paget’s disease of the bones. Salmon also contains the human hormone calcitonin. By halting bone deterioration and boosting bone density, it functions (thickness).

How should this medicine be used?

Salmon-flavored calcitonin is available as an injection solution that can be given either subcutaneously or intramuscularly (intramuscularly). Every day or every other day, it is typically utilised. If there is anything you do not understand about the instructions on your prescription label, contact your doctor or pharmacist to clarify it. Administer the calcitonin salmon injection exactly as instructed. Use only as directed by your doctor, either in the recommended amount or frequency.

You will be shown how to administer the drug by your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Follow all instructions precisely. All empty syringes and vials should be disposed of in accordance with your doctor’s instructions.

Examine the container before preparing the dose. Use caution and contact your pharmacist if the solution is cloudy or includes particles.

Osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of the bones are not cured by calcitonin salmon, but they are treated with it. Even if you feel better, keep taking the calcitonin salmon supplement. Without consulting your doctor, never stop taking calcitonin salmon.

Other uses for this medicine

Osteogenesis imperfecta can occasionally be treated with calcitonin salmon injection. The potential dangers of using this medicine for your illness should be discussed with your doctor.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you think this drug may be recommended for other conditions.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using calcitonin salmon injection,

  • If you have any drug or food allergies, let your doctor and pharmacist know right away. To ensure you do not have an adverse response to calcitonin salmon, your doctor may do a skin test before you begin taking it.
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about any vitamins, nutritional supplements, herbal items, and prescription and over-the-counter drugs you are using.
  • If you are expecting a child, intend to get pregnant, or are a nursing mother, let your doctor know. Call your physician if you conceive while taking calcitonin salmon.

What special dietary instructions should I follow?

It’s critical to consume enough calcium and vitamin D if you’re using calcitonin salmon as an osteoporosis treatment. If your nutritional consumption is insufficient, your doctor may recommend supplements.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

Don’t provide a second dose to make up for a forgotten one. Use the advice in the dosing regimen below:

Use the missed dose if you remember it within two hours of your regularly scheduled dose if your usual dose is two doses per day. If not, skip the missing dose and resume your normal dosing plan.

Take the missed dose if you remember it the same day if your daily dosage is one dose. If not, skip the missing dose and resume your normal dosing schedule the next day.

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember it, either on the planned day or the next day if your regular dose is given every other day. From that point on, carry on with your regular every other-day dosing routine.

Provide the missing dose the following day and then continue taking it every other day if you take your medication three times a week. Beginning the following week, start your usual dose routine again.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

The original container of calcitonin salmon injection should be kept in the refrigerator. Do not shake the vials or freeze this medication. Before administration, allow the solution to acclimatise to room temperature. If the calcitonin salmon injection has been out of the fridge for longer than 24 hours, do not use it. Put all goods in a safe, dry location that is out of children’s reach.

Although many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medications website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.
