Why is this medication prescribed?

Aphthous ulcers, often known as canker sores, are mouth ulcers that are treated with amlexanox. It speeds up the healing process for ulcers. Amlexanox shortens the time it takes for you to heal, which also lessens your pain.

Ask your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist for further details if you’re interested in using this drug for a different purpose.

How should this medicine be used?

Amlexanox is a paste that is beige in hue. As soon as ulcer symptoms are identified, amlexanox should be taken. Typically, amlexanox is administered four times day, after brushing and flossing, at breakfast, lunch, supper, and before bed. Squeeze 0.6 centimetres (about 1/4 inch) of paste onto your finger. Apply a small amount of amlexanox with mild pressure to each oral ulcer. After using Amlexanox, promptly wash your hands. Amlexanox should only be used up until the ulcer heals, which typically takes 10 days. In the event that considerable healing has not taken place after 10 days, speak to your doctor or dentist.

Ask your doctor, dentist, or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you do not understand, and carefully follow their instructions. As recommended, take amlexanox as prescribed. Use it only as directed by your dentist or doctor, neither more nor less regularly.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using amlexanox,

  • If you have an allergy to amlexanox or any other medication, tell your dentist, doctor, and pharmacist right away.
  • Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all of the medications you are taking, including vitamins and over-the-counter remedies, both prescription and non-prescription.
  • If you are pregnant, intend to become pregnant, or are nursing a baby, let your doctor or dentist know. Call your doctor or dentist if you conceive while taking amlexanox.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

As soon as you realise you missed a dose, administer it. If the next dose is soon due, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Applying a second dose to make up for a missed one is not advised.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Amlexanox could have negative effects. If any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away, consult your doctor or dentist right once:

  • Skin that occasionally experiences very slight discomfort, stinging, or burning
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea

Call your doctor or dentist right away if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Rash

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting may receive a report from you or your physician if you encounter a major side effect.

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. Store it away from excessive heat and moisture at room temperature (not in the bathroom).

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.

As many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org

What other information should I know?

Keep all of your appointments with the dentist and/or doctor. Amlexanox must only be used externally. Avoid getting amlexanox in your eyes. If that happens, immediately rinse your eyes.

Do not share your medication with anybody else. Any queries you may have regarding medication refills should be directed to your pharmacist. If your ulcers worsen or do not heal within 10 days, let your dentist or doctor know.

You should keep a written record of every medication you take, including any over-the-counter (OTC) items, prescription drugs, and dietary supplements like vitamins and minerals. This list should be brought with you whenever you see a doctor or are admitted to the hospital. You should always have this information with you in case of emergencies.
