Common uses
Zonalon is an antipruritic used to reduce itching associated with certain skin conditions.

 

Before using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Zonalon. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking guanadrel, guanethidine, or tramadol. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking carbamazepine, cimetidine, clonidine, guanfacine, certain antibiotics called macrolides, heart medicines for arrhythmias for such as dofetilide, mibefradil, or any medicine for emotional or mood conditions such as fluoxetine (SSRIs) or monoamine oxidase inhibitors. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking other medicines that can cause drowsiness such as antihistamines, narcotic pain medicines, or tranquilizers among others. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including prostate problems or glaucoma, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of heart conditions, untreated narrow angle glaucoma, or difficulty urinating. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine. Use of this medicine in young children is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine on your child.

 

Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine is for use on the skin only. Wash and completely dry the affected area. Apply a thin film of this medicine to the affected area and gently rub it in. DO NOT BANDAGE OR WRAP the affected area unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Wash your hands immediately after using this medicine unless the medicine is being used to treat a skin condition on your hands. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dosed and go back to your regular dosing schedule.

 

Cautions
DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE more often or for a longer time than recommended by your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. AVOID GETTING THIS MEDICINE IN YOUR EYES or on the inside of your nose of mouth. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the medicine, especially the drowsiness and confusion effects. FOR WOMEN: IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

 

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include stinging or burning when applied, drowsiness, confusion, dry mouth, thirst, headache, fatigue, or dizziness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience blurred vision or a rapid or pounding heartbeat. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, unusual itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.

 

Additional information
If your symptoms do not improve after using this medicine for 8 days or if your condition becomes worse, contact your doctor. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
