Common uses

This medicine is a protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat certain types of advanced or metastatic breast cancer in certain patients. It is used in combination with another medicine, capecitabine. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking atazanavir; azole antifungals (such as itraconazole, ketoconazole); indinavir; ketolide antibiotics (such as telithromycin); nefazodone; nelfinavir; ritonavir; saquinavir; telithromycin; voriconazole; macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin, erythromycin); barbiturates (such as phenobarbital); carbamazepine; corticosteroids (such as dexamethasone); hydantoins (such as phenytoin); rifabutin; rifampin; rifapentin; or St. John’s wort. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver problems, heart problems, an irregular heartbeat (such as QT prolongation), bone marrow problems, low white blood cell counts, low blood platelets, low blood electrolyte levels, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.


Follow the directions for taking this medicine provided by your doctor. An additional patient information leaflet is available with this medicine. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. Your dose will depend on your medical condition and response to therapy. TAKE THIS MEDICINE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after eating. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. AVOID EATING GRAPEFRUIT OR DRINKING GRAPEFRUIT JUICE while taking this medicine. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.


DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED dose or use this medicine for longer than prescribed. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver function and blood counts may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU MAY BECOME PREGNANT, YOU MUST USE AN EFFECTIVE FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL while you take this medicine. If you have questions about effective birth control, talk with your doctor. IF YOU EXPERIENCE VOMITING OR DIARRHEA, contact your doctor about ways to avoid becoming dehydrated. FOR WOMEN: THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE HARM TO THE FETUS. DO NOT BECOME PREGNANT WHILE YOU ARE USING IT. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine while you are pregnant. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Possible side effects

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include back pain, diarrhea, dry skin, minor redness or tingling of hands and feet, mouth sores, nausea, stomach pain or upset, tiredness, trouble sleeping, and vomiting. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience dark urine; fast or irregular heartbeat; severe pain, redness, or swelling of the hands or feet; severe stomach pain or diarrhea; severe tiredness or weakness; shortness of breath; unusual bruising or bleeding; or yellowing of the eyes or skin. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
