Chemical Name: LATANOPROST (la-TA-noe-prost)
Travatan is a prostaglandin used to treat glaucoma.Â Travatan may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Use travoprost ophthalmic eyedrops exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse to explain them to you. Travoprost ophthalmic is usually used once a day, one drop in the affected eye(s), in the evening. Do not use more of this medication than is prescribed, as more frequent administration may decrease the effects of the medication. Since travoprost ophthalmic is used regularly, try to make applying them a part of your nightly routine. Follow your doctor’s instructions. Wash your hands before and after using the eyedrops. Travoprost ophthalmic contains a preservative (benzalkonium chloride), therefore contact lenses should not be worn when applying the medication. Contact lenses can be inserted 15 minutes after application of the drops.
To apply the eyedrops:
Tilt your head back slightly and pull down on your lower eyelid. Position the dropper above your eye. Steady the hand holding the bottle by placing your thumb against your brow or the bridge of your nose. Look up and away from the dropper. Gently press or lightly tap, the side of the bottle to allow only a single drop of medicine fall into the pocket formed by your lower eyelid. Do not allow the dropper to touch your eye. Close the eye and apply gentle pressure to the inside corner of the eye for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. If you are using drops in both eyes, repeat this procedure in the other eye. If you are also using another eye medication, wait at least 5 minutes before applying the other medication.
Green/blue or blue/gray eyes may turn brown from the use of this medicine. This change usually appears during the first 18 months of therapy. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE a darkening of your eyelid in the treated eye. There may also be eyelash changes such as increased length, color, thickness, or number. All of these effects may be permanent. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE within 5 minutes of any other eye medicines. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. This medicine may cause blurred vision. Make sure your vision is clear before driving or performing any task that requires good vision. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include blurred vision, eye irritation, eye redness, or a change in eye color. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a change in vision, unexplained muscle or joint pain, or skin itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed.
TO PREVENT WASTE WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE, do not squeeze the bottle. Turn bottle right side up immediately after a drop is released. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
