Why is this medication prescribed?

Athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm are just a few of the skin illnesses that tolnaftate treats.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you’re interested in using this drug for any other conditions.

How should this medicine be used?

Tolnaftate can be applied to the skin as a cream, liquid, powder, gel, spray powder, and spray liquid. Typically, tolnaftate is used twice day. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions you do not understand, and carefully follow any instructions on the packaging or on the label of your prescription. Follow the tolnaftate directions exactly. Use it only as prescribed by your doctor, neither more nor less of it, and never more frequently.

Within two to three days, jock itch and athlete’s foot pain and itching should subside. After symptoms stop, continue medication for at least two more weeks. It can take 4-6 weeks to complete the course of treatment.

Clean the diseased area thoroughly, let it dry, and then gently rub the medication in until the majority of the infection is gone. Just enough medicine should be applied to the affected region. Once the drug has been applied, wash your hands.

Between the toes, use spray and powder formulations sparingly on socks and shoes. Before each use, shake the sprays thoroughly to thoroughly mix the drug. Then, spray from a distance of at least 6 inches.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using tolnaftate,

  • If you have any medicine or tolnaftate allergies, let your doctor and pharmacist know right away.
  • In addition to vitamins, be sure to let your doctor and pharmacist know what prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking.
  • Inform your doctor if you are expecting, intend to get pregnant, or are nursing a baby. Call your doctor if you become pregnant while taking tolnaftate.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

As soon as you realise you missed a dose, administer it. If the next dose is soon due, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Applying a second dose to make up for a missed one is not advised.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Side effects are possible with tolnaftate. Call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Skin sensitivity

You or your doctor can submit a report to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting programme online or by phone if you have a serious side event (1-800-332-1088).

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. Store it away from excessive heat and moisture at room temperature (not in the bathroom). Spray cans shouldn’t be punctured or set on fire.

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.

As many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org

What other information should I know?

Do not miss any of your doctor’s appointments. Only use of tolnaftate is external. Avoid getting tolnaftate in your mouth, nose, or eyes, and avoid swallowing it. Except as directed by your doctor, avoid clothing the area being treated with bandages, cosmetics, lotions, or other skin medicines.

Do not share your medication with anybody else. Any queries you may have regarding medication refills should be directed to your pharmacist. Call your doctor if you continue to experience infection symptoms after taking the tolnaftate.

You should keep a written record of every medication you take, including any over-the-counter (OTC) items, prescription drugs, and dietary supplements like vitamins and minerals. This list should be brought with you whenever you see a doctor or are admitted to the hospital. You should always have this information with you in case of emergencies.
