Chemical Name: TRETINOIN (TRET-i-noyn)
This medicine is a retinoid used to induce remission of certain types of cancers.
WARNING: Tretinoin can cause severe, even fatal, side effects. Therefore, it must be used only under close medical supervision. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: fever, breathing trouble, weight gain, dizziness, chest pain, unusual fatigue, or persistent sore throat. It may be necessary for your doctor to use other medicines with tretinoin to reduce the chance of side effects. This medicine can cause severe birth defects when used during pregnancy. Therefore women who are pregnant must not use tretinoin. Women must avoid becoming pregnant while taking this medicine. Pregnancy tests should be run one week before starting use of this drug. Women should use two forms of birth control at the same time (or complete avoidance of sexual intercourse) while using this medicine and for one month after tretinoin use has been stopped. You must also have monthly pregnancy testing and contraception counseling from your doctor while taking this medicine. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking tranexamic acid. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. THIS MEDICINE MAY BE TAKEN WITH FOOD if it upsets your stomach. TAKE THIS MEDICINE ON A REGULAR SCHEDULE, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor immediately.
KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. Females taking this medicine should use 2 methods of birth control during and for 1 month after using this medicine. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant (also see Before Using section). IF YOU SUSPECT THAT YOU COULD BE PREGNANT contact your doctor immediately. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS DRUG IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include headache; fever; weakness; fatigue; dry skin and mouth; bone pain; nausea; vomiting; rash; increased sweating; or hair loss. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience dizziness, shortness of breath, or weight gain. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children.
