Truvada is an antiviral combination used with other medicines to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Before using
WARNING: A BUILDUP OF LACTIC ACID IN THE BLOOD (LACTIC ACIDOSIS), SEVERE LIVER PROBLEMS, AND IN SOME CASES DEATH, have been reported with the use of this medicine, either alone or in combination with other medicines used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. IF YOU ALSO HAVE HEPATITIS B INFECTION, WORSENING OF YOUR CONDITION MAY OCCUR if you stop taking this medicine. DO NOT STOP TAKING THIS MEDICINE without your doctor’s approval. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking atazanavir (without ritonavir), lamivudine, or medicines containing lamivudine, emtricitabine, or tenofovir. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking didanosine, atazanavir with ritonavir, lopinavir with ritonavir, adefovir dipivoxil, cidofovir, acyclovir, valacyclovir, ganciclovir, or valganciclovir. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including hepatitis B infection, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of abnormal liver function tests, severe liver problems, severe kidney problems, or lactic acidosis. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

Directions
Follow the directions for using Truvada provided by your doctor. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly closed container, away from heat and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Take this medicine regularly to receive the most benefit from it. It is important not to miss doses of this medicine. Taking this medicine at the same time each day will help you to remember. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are taking one dose daily, take the missed dose if you remember the same day. Skip the missed dose if you do not remember until the next day. DO NOT take 2 doses at once.

Cautions
DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you have had an allergic reaction to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT A CURE FOR HIV INFECTION and will not prevent you from spreading HIV infection to others through blood or sexual contact. THIS MEDICINE MAY NOT PREVENT STDs OR OTHER INFECTIONS. If your health changes, check with your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE without checking with your doctor. DO NOT STOP USING THIS MEDICINE without first checking with your doctor. This may cause the amount of the virus to increase or may make the virus harder to treat. Some conditions may become worse when the medicine is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be slowly lowered to avoid side effects. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver and kidney function tests, and bone density tests may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. This medicine may cause dizziness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. The use of tenofovir, lamivudine, and abacavir in combination may not be effective in treating HIV infection. If you are currently taking all three of these medicines, contact your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible to carefully review your medicines. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include headache, dizziness, weakness, decreased appetite, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, stomach pain, muscle or joint pain, sinus drainage, cough, lightening of the skin color on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet, and changes in body fat (such as increased fat in the upper back and stomach areas, or decreased fat in the face, arms, and legs). If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience fever, numbness or tingling in your arms or legs, or depression/mental or mood changes. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience dark urine, unusual drowsiness or fatigue, yellowing of eyes or skin, rapid breathing, muscle aches, stomach or abdominal pain, decreased urination, or difficulty urinating. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much
IF OVERDOSE IS SUSPECTED, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Additional information
If you have any questions concerning how to prevent spreading HIV infection to other people, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Always use a condom during sexual intercourse. DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICINE for other health conditions. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children. IF YOU WILL BE USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, be sure to obtain necessary refills before your supply runs out.
