Why is this medication prescribed?

Athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm are among the skin illnesses that tolnaftate prevents from growing.

You should speak with your doctor or pharmacist for more details if you want to take this drug for a different purpose.

How should this medicine be used?

Tolnaftate can be applied to the skin as a cream, liquid, powder, gel, spray powder, and spray liquid. Typically, tolnaftate is used twice day. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions you do not understand, and carefully follow any instructions on the packaging or on the label of your prescription. Follow the tolnaftate directions exactly. Use it only as prescribed by your doctor, neither more nor less of it, and never more frequently.

Within two to three days, jock itch or the burning and pain associated with athlete’s foot should go away. After the symptoms go away, keep up the medication for at least two weeks. Treatment may be required for a total of 4-6 weeks.

After thoroughly cleaning and letting it dry, carefully rub the medication into the affected region until the majority of the infection has vanished. Apply the medication only where it is needed to treat the region. After applying the drug, wash your hands.

Between the toes, you should use spray and powder formulations; spare socks and delicate footwear. Sprays should be shaken well before each use to combine the medication, and then they should be sprayed at least 6 inches away from the skin.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before using tolnaftate,

  • If you have any medication allergies, be sure to let your doctor and pharmacist know.
  • Any prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including with vitamins, should be disclosed to your doctor and pharmacist.
  • If you’re expecting a baby, intend to get pregnant, or are currently nursing, let your doctor know. Tolnaftate can cause pregnancy, so contact your doctor right once if it does.

What should I do if I forget a dose?

As soon as you realise you missed a dose, administer it. If the next dose is soon due, skip the missed one and carry on with your regular dosing plan. Applying a second dose to make up for a missed one is not advised.

What side effects can this medication cause?

Side effects are possible with tolnaftate. Call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Skin sensitivity

You or your doctor can submit a report to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting programme online or by phone if you have a serious side event (1-800-332-1088).

What should I know about storage and disposal of this medication?

Keep this medication tightly closed in the original container and out of the reach of children. Store it away from excessive heat and moisture at room temperature (not in the bathroom). Spray cans shouldn’t be punctured or set on fire.

Unused prescriptions must be disposed of carefully to prevent pets, kids, and other people from ingesting them. You should not, however, dispose of this medication in the toilet. Instead, utilising a medicine take-back programme is the easiest approach to get rid of your medication. To find out about take-back programmes in your area, speak with your pharmacist or the garbage/recycling department in your city. If you do not have access to a take-back programme, see the FDA’s Safe Disposal of Medicines website at http://goo.gl/c4Rm4p for additional information.

As many containers (such as weekly pill minders and those for eye drops, creams, patches, and inhalers) are not child-resistant and are simple for young children to open, it is crucial to keep all medications out of sight and out of reach of children. Always lock safety caps and promptly stash medication up and away from young children where it is out of their sight and reach to prevent poisoning. http://www.upandaway.org

What other information should I know?

Keep all of your doctor’s appointments. Tolnaftate should only be used externally. Do not swallow tolnaftate and avoid getting it in your mouth, nose, or eyes. If your doctor has not instructed you to, avoid using dressings, bandages, cosmetics, lotions, or other skin treatments on the region being treated.

Do not share your medication with anybody else. Any queries you may have regarding medication refills should be directed to your pharmacist. Call your doctor if you continue to experience infection symptoms after taking the tolnaftate.

You should keep a written record of every medication you take, including any over-the-counter (OTC) items, prescription drugs, and dietary supplements like vitamins and minerals. This list should be brought with you whenever you see a doctor or are admitted to the hospital. You should always have this information with you in case of emergencies.
