Common uses

Benztropine is an anticholinergic agent used to treat Parkinson's disease. Benztropine may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Before using

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Benztropine. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Additional monitoring of your dost or condition may be needed if you are taking medicine used to treat mood or emotional disorders (phenothiazines), amantadine, or digoxin. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including glaucoma, irregular heartbeat, urinating problems, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about using Benztropine.


Follow the directions for using Benztropine provided by your doctor. TAKE Benztropine with meals or after finishing meals.
STORE Benztropine at room temperature, away from heat and light. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF Benztropine, take it as soon as possible. If it is within 2 hours of your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.


IT MAY TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS for Benztropine to work.
DO NOT STOP TAKING Benztropine without first discussing with your doctor. Benztropine may cause blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Benztropine. Benztropine may cause drowziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness.
DO NOT BECOME OVERHEATED in hot weather or during exercise or other activities since heatstroke may occur.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.
FOR WOMEN: if you plan on becoming pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Benztropine during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using Benztropine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Possible side effects 

SIDE EFFECTS that may go away during treatment, include dry mouth, headache, nausea, constipation, stomach upset, dizziness, lightheadedness, loss of appetite, nervousness, sleeplessness, drowsiness, increased sensitivity of eyes to light, or blurred vision. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor.
CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience a fast or pounding heartbeat, chest pain, confusion, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, difficult or painful urination, uncontrolled movements, eye pain, rash, mood or mental changes. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include dilated pupils; hot, dry, flushed skin; fast heartbeat; and fast breathing.

Additional information

DO NOT SHARE Benztropine with others for whom it was not prescribed.
DO NOT USE Benztropine for other health conditions.
KEEP Benztropine out of the reach of children.
IF USING Benztropine for an extended period of time, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
